‘The Voice’ singer Christina Grimmie shot, killed The Plaza LIVE in Orlando Friday night
Orlando police and firefighter/paramedics responded before 11:00 p.m. to a report of shots fired and a person shot. Witnesses reported at least six gunshots were fired. Shortly after 3:00 a.m. Saturday, Orlando Police Department announced that Christina Grimmie had been killed.
Initial investigation by Orlando police discovered that Christina Grimmie, age 22, was shot by a man armed with two guns as she was signing autographs late Friday night. She died early Saturday at a nearby hospital.
Grimmie’s brother tackled the shooter, and then the gunman fatally shot himself.
Grimmie, born in 1994, grew up in Marlton, New Jersey where she attended Baptist Regional Elementary School and Cherokee High School; she has identified herself as a Christian. Grimmie’s father noticed her talent for singing when she was six years old. Grimmie started playing piano at age 10. She took piano lessons, but has stated she “plays by ear.” Grimmie was homeschooled during her junior year in high school in 2010. At age 20, Grimmie finished 3rd place behind winner Josh Kaufman and runner-up Jake Worthington in Season 6 of NBC’s “The Voice” 2014.
The Plaza Live is one of Orlando’s oldest theaters, which was transformed from a cinema to a music venue. The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra purchased The Plaza Live building and assets for $3.4 million. The 1000-seat music hall is designed to accommodate chamber music concerts, rock, jazz, comedy and contemporary music events.
